About the Authors

Tim Tiner

Tim Tiner has worked as a nature writer for 16 years. In addition to co-authoring four popular nature guide books, his work has appeared in Seasons magazine (now called ON Nature), the official journal of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists; Cottage Life magazine, and Canadian Geographic.

He covered the environmental beat for Now magazine in the late 1980s and early ‘90s and from 1986 to 1987 lived in Hong Kong, where he was a staff writer at the newsmagazine Asiaweek.

He has travelled across Canada, through Asia, ridden the Trans-Siberian Express to Europe and worked as a student in London, England. Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Ottawa and St. Catharines, Ontario, he attended the Ryerson School of Journalism in the early 1980s.

Tim currently lives in Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood with his spouse Ellie Kirzner and most often frequents the Don Valley and the Leslie Street Spit for local nature outings.

Doug Bennet

Doug Bennet is an avid birder, canoeist, camper and member of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists and Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

In addition to his nature writing, he is an award-winning journalist and publisher of Masthead, the trade journal for the magazine industry. He was previously the editor of Canadian Home Workshop magazine. A graduate of the Ryerson School of Journalism, Doug was born in Montreal, grew up in Ottawa and has lived in Calgary and London, England. He now resides with his wife Nancy Clark and two young children in Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood, a short and often-taken walk from High Park and the city’s western lakefront.
